HPL#8 – Never, ever give up: Overcoming setbacks and adversity with Annie Bothma

“Running became a way for me to escape my problems…[it] taught me to overcome my illness, it’s the thing that makes me feel capable.” – Annie Bothma (Runner and Endurance Athlete)

Episode #8 features, perhaps, one of the most inspiring stories of overcoming adversity that you may ever listen to. Andri chats to South African endurance athlete and Olympic marathon hopeful, Annie Bothma.

Annie has battled illnesses and setbacks for most of her life while also building a career as a professional athlete. She was diagnosed with coeliac disease as well as hypopituitarism by the age of 18, illnesses which still pose a daily challenge for her. She has also had to recover from two major motor accidents and a serious fall to be able to be in a position today to challenge for a place at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

There is nothing more inspiring than a story of pure grit and tenacity in the face of serious adversity. Viktor Frankl wrote that Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Annie epitomises this response, refusing to be a victim but a champion and hero, regardless of where she stands on a podium.
