Hilana is the National Player Development Manager for MyPlayers, which is the commercial arm of the SA Rugby Players’ Association. She is responsible for the holistic development of professional rugby players in South Africa. As a psychologist, she manages a team of player development managers spread across South Africa, all with the common goal of helping players plan and grow their own personal wellbeing.

What did you learn during a world-changing 2020?

On HPL#17 I afford myself some time to share a couple of philosophies on what this year taught me about leadership and how it can help you also be a better leader that is driven for performance.

Whether you lead others or just want to lead yourself well, the basic principles for building a high performance life are the same.

In this episode you will learn how a narrow focus can better help you choose what to prioritise when aiming for achievements. You will also learn that being jobless is okay and that true freedom comes from doing your own thing.

Most importantly you will learn that the core of solid leadership is to find something you truly believe in and to stand strongly for it, rather than finding something to stand against. Inspiring people to follow your legacy relies on your ability to get people to believe what you believe in and to be able to understand what motivates people’s points of view.

HPL#15 – Working that magic muscle: How helping your glutes wake up can change your life with Nadia Clenzos

So many of us sit all day at a desk. For most who do it’s causing a backward spiral that you may not be aware of. Or you might already have injuries that you didn’t even know were caused by sitting.

A couple of years ago I continuously twisted my ankle while running due to an under-firing left leg. I managed to trace this problem back to weak glutes caused by sitting.

In this episode I have a conversation with Stellenbosch Academy of Sport physiotherapist Nadia Clenzos.

Nadia is a rehab physio with the Springboks Sevens team, having also previously worked with WP Rugby and the Junior Springboks.

She helps me find out how reawakening the glute muscles (your butt) and just moving around a bit more during the day can avoid your muscular system from spiralling into an imbalanced mess, like mine did from constant sitting.

We live in an age of complexity. We want more knowledge, more skills, more roles and more tasks to drive our lives. We want busyness to be the proof of our productivity.

Ross Williams is my guest on the HPL Podcast #14 and he believes that this is the most ineffective way to successfully build a high performance lifestyle.

Ross is a relationship marketing specialist and rugby coach. He believes in simplicity, mastery and focus and strongly feels that less is more and slower is better. We tend to be more successful in the areas we are best at and if we spend more time on them, we are almost guaranteed a happier life.

He feels that we also need to take life a little slower if we are to keep our minds healthy and strong for when we really jump into seasons of serious performance.

HPL#11 – Have a great day!: How keeping your head down helps your build progress

Who hasn’t had a rough year? It doesn’t matter what the year is. When you stretch out your timeline long enough to contain all the things that have happened to you and what you need to achieve, chances are you are increasing the level of stress in your life.

The secret to fighting this is to shrink that timeline to just focus on today. If you can make today great and then tomorrow and then the next, chances are you will achieve more than you would have if you thought about the future too much.

In this episode Andri shares some stories from some tough years in his life and what focusing on the short term does to improve personal progress towards a goal and increase performance.
